All aspects of any professional role can be considered part of project management and implementation. Therefore, it is important to invest in education and training to ensure you have the skills you need to succeed in the future.
There are many approaches and qualifications in the field of project management, but probably the best known are the PMP and PRINCE2. We are often asked about the difference between these two qualifications. We have therefore decided to compare the most important aspects of these two qualifications for you.
PRINCE2 (Projects in a Controlled Environment)
PRINCE2 is an integrated project management methodology that provides a set of processes and issues applicable to managing projects from start to finish. PRINCE2 provides a model for what needs to be done, who will do it and when it will be done.
PRINCE2 was developed by the UK Government Commercial Office (OGC) in 1996 and is a registered trademark of Axelos. The current version is the sixth edition of PRINCE2.
PMP (Project Management Professional)
PMP, short for Project Management Professional, is a standard and “body of knowledge” (PMBOK). It encompasses “all” the knowledge and behaviors required for project management. The PMP covers a broad range of project management skills and techniques that project managers need to apply, such as leadership and negotiation.
This qualification was developed and awarded by the Project Management Institute (PMI), an authority on project management.

The difference between PRINCE2 and PMP
An important distinction is that PRINCE2 is a methodology whereas PMP is considered a body of knowledge.
The PRINCE2 methodology guides and demonstrates how to carry out projects. It also provides templates that can be used, or adapted to meet the needs of the project or organization.
- On the other hand, PMP provides a project management framework and body of knowledge.
- They can provide a set of techniques and tools that can be adapted to your needs.
In other words, the PMP qualification demonstrates mastery of project management skills and methodologies, while the PRINCE2 qualification demonstrates the ability to manage projects in a controlled manner following the PRINCE2 methodology.
This means that PMP certification certifies the mastery of Project Management skills and techniques, while the PRINCE2 certification certifies the ability to manage the project in a controlled manner following the PRINCE2 method.
To create a plan in PRINCE2 it is necessary to estimate the activities – there are various techniques that can be applied depending on the project, but PRINCE2 does not say what these techniques are.
